EU-Cohesion Policy, Lombardy Region keeps on investing in innovation

The European Parliament hosted on 28 November in Brussels the 10th European Innovation Summit, in cooperation with the #CohesionAlliance and the Region of Lower Austria.

Main focus of the event - to which took part several MEPs, the President of CoR and regional ministers and local governors – was the future of EU-Cohesion Policy as indispensable tool for all EU regions for the Future of Europe and the discussions in the context of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027.

De Nichilo Rizzoli, valorise our regional best practices

"Lombardy Region is commitment to a holistic innovation approach in the post-2020 investment strategies, said Melania de Nichilo Rizzoli, Minister for Education, Training and Employment of the Lombardy Region, placing the citizens in their individual and social dimension at the centre of its active policies".

"Our main goal, she added, is to valorise our regional best practices such as "Dote Unica Lavoro", a job inclusion' and re-integration's tool as well as for professional qualification or re-training, is to involve unemployed people in the labour market in an active way".

EU-Cohesion Policy post 2020 and Innovation

Innovation is the key element to boost growth and jobs in Europe, therefore based on the initiative #regions4cohesion and the #CohesionAlliance, the importance of innovation in the context of Cohesion Policy was put forward.

"Given the impact in terms of employment in our Region, continued Ms Rizzoli, we are committed to valorise the partnership principle, both at regional and EU level, through the continuous dialogue with European Institutions as well as the work with partner Regions.

Innovation linked to EU funds

"We believe that Innovation should be declined with an integrated approach at all levels: my Region is developing - through an innovative methodology based on artificial intelligence - a strategic guideline document to support investment choices, also linked to European Structural and Investments Funds for the post-2020 period".

Looking ahead, she concluded, we ask the Commission and the co-legislators to keep on going their efforts of simplification for the beneficiaries". The gathering has been an important occasion to further debate on EU-Cohesion Policy post 2020 considering the current circumstances and key challenges, i.e digitisation, Industry 4.0, climate change, globalisation and demographic change.

Why  Cohesion Policy?

Cohesion Policy provides financial assistance to the member state regions, with the aim of increasing economic growth and improving social cohesion.

While a lot has been achieved by Cohesion Policy, the regions need this support to be continued post 2020 if the EU and all its regions are to thrive in the current highly competitive global environment.
